Pest Prevention Tips

The best approach to pest management is one with prevention in mind.  Learning about the pest, as well as what options are available for control is a key component in a successful pest management program.  You may be able to deter many pests from entering your home with a few helpful tips in mind:

    • Identify and reduce potential pest harborage areas.  The use of caulk at cracks and crevices around cabinets and baseboards can eliminate many hiding spots, for example.

    • Look for food scraps or spillage that may contribute as a potential food source for pests.  Ensure that garbage is tightly sealed and regularly removed from the home.  Even leaving your pet’s food or water out overnight can contribute to a pest problem.

    • Locate and fix any plumbing leaks that may contribute to water source for the pest.  Also consider water trays for house plants as a potential water source.  Check for proper drainage at the foundation.

    • Regularly check that your basements, crawl space or attic areas are well ventilated and dry.  Repair any problems that contribute to moisture in these areas.

    • Repair or replace any weather stripping or loose mortar around the foundation or windows of the structure.  Check for pest entry points near utilities and pipes.

    • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well trimmed and away from the structure.  If you store wood, you should keep it at least 20 feet away from the structure and avoid direct contact between the wood and the soil.
